This paper addresses the topic of information systems in public health and issues related to the protection of personal data. In particular, a number of information systems found in Italian public health care will be analyzed: for example, the electronic health record, the electronic medical record, and the health file. It will also address the principle of privacy by default and by design and its proper application to properly design a modern information system.
