The article describes the current status of the use of blockchain and smart contracts in German public administration and discusses the legal challenges of using blockchain by public authorities in the European and German law. In conclusion the authors recommend to the German legislators that they should be open-minded about new technologies and push forward with the digitalization of public administration in Germany.
